Northwest District

Sea captain John Couch laid out 200-by-200-foot blocks that formed the southern and eastern parts of the Northwest District, and the first streetcar line reached 23rd and Burnside in 1883. In the 1980s NW 23rd Avenue changed from a neighborhood retail street into a boutique street. The Alphabet Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2000.
